![]() ![]() The problem is that because Japanese kanji can be read in so many ways, sometimes it’s not always clear which reading is intended. There aren’t many kana, so you can easily master it in a few days.Īnyway, standard Japanese writing uses a mix of both kanji and kana, as well as a dash of English. Because it’s based around syllables, kana is usually super-easy to read and pronounce. Kana is a bit more like a “syllable alphabet” and generally looks simpler, with stuff like この and ハロー and そら. There are thousands of kanji characters and each one usually has multiple meanings and pronunciations that you gotta memorize. Kanji originates from Chinese and generally looks a bit complicated, you know, stuff like 影響 and 爆弾 and 馬鹿. In super-simple terms, Japanese writing comes in two forms: kanji and kana. There is a little more to it than that, though. The quick answer is that the extra text above normal text is basically a pronunciation guide. What is up with that?Īs you can see, there seems to be small text above the regular text there… What the heck is this craziness?! If you look in the attached picture, it shows regular Japanese text, but for some of the bunches of text, there is text above it in a smaller font. I recently came across a screenshot of animal crossing, and I was confused about something. A reader named Joe asked a question about Japanese text that actually tends to pop up on a regular basis: ![]()

Improving your competence in dealing with conflict can yield positive effects in the real world. Additionally, when conflict is well managed, it has the potential to lead to more rewarding and satisfactory relationships (Canary & Messman, 2000). In fact, numerous research studies have shown that quantity of conflict in a relationship is not as important as how the conflict is handled (Markman et al., 1993). However, conflict isn’t always negative or unproductive. It takes effort to ignore someone or be passive aggressive, and the anger or guilt we may feel after blowing up at someone are valid negative feelings. Domestic violence is a serious issue and is discussed in the section “The Dark Side of Relationships.”Ĭonflict is an inevitable part of close relationships and can take a negative emotional toll. Interpersonal conflict is, however, distinct from interpersonal violence, which goes beyond communication to include abuse. Interpersonal conflict may be expressed verbally or nonverbally along a continuum ranging from a nearly imperceptible cold shoulder to a very obvious blowout. Interpersonal conflict occurs in interactions where there are real or perceived incompatible goals, scarce resources, or opposing viewpoints. So think back and ask yourself, “How well do I handle conflict?” As with all areas of communication, we can improve if we have the background knowledge to identify relevant communication phenomena and the motivation to reflect on and enhance our communication skills. You probably also have experiences managing conflict in romantic relationships and in the workplace. If you’ve recently moved away to go to college, you may be negotiating roommate conflicts as you adjust to living with someone you may not know at all. If you still live at home with a parent or parents, you may have daily conflicts with your family as you try to balance your autonomy, or desire for independence, with the practicalities of living under your family’s roof. Who do you have the most conflict with right now? Your answer to this question probably depends on the various contexts in your life.
